An interesting set of 6 Victorian silver teapoons and matching sugartongs, with a 15th Century soldier carrying a halberd. This appears to be a private pattern, we have not been able to trace it in the pattern books (all assistance welcome). The pattern is very detailed, both on the front and the back, we love these spoons. In addition to the soldier, complete with collar, the front has what could be an apple tree, the back has a shield (unengraved, intended for family crest) and a different flowering plant, with a stipple background. The spoons and tongs are also great quality and a good weight, as one would expect from Elkington. All 7 pieces are clearly hallmarked, they also carry a registration mark "RD105810", so Elkington protected the design. All the spoons are 1892, the tongs are 1893. Elkington was one of the leading British Silversmiths in the 19 and 20th centuries, they were founded in 1836, and are known for their excellent quality. Note - We have now identified this pattern as "Tudor Men & Women"...

A Georgian silver tablespoon in the Fiddle pattern, by perhaps the most famous of English goldsmiths, Paul Storr. The spoon is good quality, with a fatter extended drop, and a generous bowl size. The spoon also has an engraved family crest of a birds head above a tower, this has some wear but is still visible. The London hallmarks for 1819 are very clear, the makers mark PS in shaped punch is also clear but has some wear on the S. This is Paul Storr's 9th mark, with no dot between letters, with the punch outline more oval than circular, he registered this mark in 1817 (Paul Storr, 1781-1844, by N. Penzer, page 82). A crescent mark is also clearly visible next to the makers mark, this would have belonged to the journeyman who made the spoon in Storr's workshop. Penzer described Storr as "the last of the great goldsmiths", he worked between 1793 and 1838.

An interesting and pretty Georgian silver caddy spoon, with an unusual pierced bowl. The bowl is circular, and has 16 nail shaped piercings surrounding a central circular piercing, the design complemented with bright cut engraving, which continues on the handle, with a blank cartouche which has not been engraved. The spoon is clearly hallmarked, with a very clear lion passant, date letter A for 1796, and Georgian duty mark, the latter partially covers the makers mark GB in rectangular punch which was struck earlier. A small crescent moon journeyman's mark is also present, their is no town mark, although we are confident this is a London spoon. A very similar pierced caddy spoon with a different design, also by George Burrows but dated 1793, can be seen on the Steppes Hill Farm website, www.steppeshillfarmantiques.com, note this spoon also has the crescent moon mark and no town mark. Pierced caddy spoons are known but quite rare, most seem to date between 1790 and 1800, by a few London and Birmingham makers. ...

A set of 2 Victorian silver salt spoons, both with additional Broad Arrow hallmarks, indicating the spoons were owned by the British War Department or War Office, so probably used by the military, possibly an Officers Mess. The spoons are Old English pattern, and have gilded bowls, to protect the bowls from corrosive salt. The spoons are almost identical but not a pair, the first was made in 1855 by George Adams (Chawner & Co.), the second in 1859 by Robert Garrard II, who were appointed Goldsmiths & Jewellers to the King in 1830, they still hold the Royal Warrant today. The Garrard spoon has engraved initial F, and has more prominent yellow gilding, it is very slightly shorter and lighter than the Adams spoon (2 grammes lighter). Both spoons have clear hallmarks and well struck broad arrows, the Adams spoon also has a journeyman's device, the Garrard maker mark is partially worn, but the crown above the letters is clearly visible. A Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club sterling silver dish, celebrating the greatest event in the club's history, the winning of "The Double", the Football League and the F.A. Cup Final in the 1960-1961 season. The dish is circular with raised sides which are fluted or scalloped, with engraved crest of the cockerel with spurs standing on a football, above "T.H.F.C.", centrally positioned between the 4 hallmarks. The dish is small, but would be perfect for sweets or nuts. The hallmarks form part of the design, these include Birmingham anchor, Sterling silver lion passant, date letter N for 1962 and makers mark PP Ltd for Poston Products, who worked between 1951 and 1972. Spurs was founded in 1882, the first won the FA cup in 1901. They became the first club in the 20th century to achieve the League and FA Cup Double in 1960-1961, and collected at least one major trophy in each of the six decades from the 1950s to 2000s – an achievement only matched by Manchester United. A RFC (Royal Flying Corps) 9 carat gold pilot's wing sweetheart brooch, dating back to the Great War (World War I). The RFC logo between two feathered wings is mounted on a slender bar (also 9 carat gold), which is clearly hallmarked J.F for James Fenton of Birmingham, and 9CT for nine carat gold. The hinge and clasp are also gold, the pin is not. This brooch also has a suspension ring with gold chain and gold safety pin, to prevent the brooch being lost. This brooch is quite small and light, but still a rare and lovely item. The RFC was established in 1912, and in 1918 it was merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force (RAF), so only existed for 6 years. 11 RFC members received the Victoria Cross during the War, mortality rates for pilots was extremely high.

A sterling silver wine coaster, with a finely pierced attractive border, and a central circular silver plaque (for engraving). The coaster has a wooden base with 4 circular grooves, the base has blue felt to protect the table. The silver plaque has never been engraved. The condition is pleasing, often these coasters have suffered damage to the piercing, this one is in excellent condition. The hallmarks are clear, Springbok head (South African standard mark post 1975), S925, and makers mark E T in separate punches, for E Tiessen, Manufacturing Jewellers who worked from 14 Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, in the 1970's. This style of pierced wine coaster first appeared in the 1780's. Note - we have received correspondance from a leading collector that this piece is possibly not by E Tiessen, but by maker E, with T being date letter for 1994 - possibly J&L Martin of EM-ESS silversmiths, who were leading silversmiths, noted for quality holloware, they are known to have exhibited at the Rand Easter Show (1...

A pair of Gorham sterling Medallion serving implements, the first a pastry fork and the second a pickle knife. Both have the medallion motif of a classical femaile looking left, with hair braids, the face is strong. Both are pierced with the "tulip cut", the knife also has bright cut engraving. Both have the original owners initials MMC in Gothic script engraved on the back. Gorham medallion pattern was designed by George Wilkinson in 1864, it is a multi-motif pattern, with 4 different medallion options. Medallion pattern proved popular, it was copied by numerous other firms, but the original Gorham items are most collectable today. The hallmarks are clear on both pieces, and include Gorham makers mark, PAT 1864 and STERLING. Gorham Corporation, which still exists today, was founded in 1831, they dominated the solid silver flatware market in the USA for 125 years (Gorham Silver, page 50). The medallion pattern was even retailed by Tiffany.

A matching pair of nursery rhyme silver baby implements, a spoon and baby pusher, intended as Christening gifts. Both have short handles, the spoon with Jack and Jill picture, the pusher with Little Boy Blue. The detail on both is lovely, as can be seen from the photographs. Both are clearly hallmarked, the spoon was made in 1932, the pusher in 1936, but both by the same maker WH Collins, and both part of their nursery rhyme collection. The pusher has original owners initials MJ, lightly engraved so this could be removed. The pusher also has a registration number, indicating the design was protected.

A cast silver commemorative wine label engraved "RUM", made to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. The label is curved rectangular shape, with central peak topped with the Royal crown, and beautiful applied lion supporters on each side. The label is lovely quality, quite heavy, a pleasure to hold. These wine labels were distributed by the wine merchants Saccone & Speed, as can be seen in the photograph of the advert (courtesy of www.steppeshillfarmantiques.com). The hallmarks are very clear, and include the coronation mark, and makers mark LGD for Leslie Durbin. Leslie Durbin was one of the most admired silversmiths of the 20th century, his silver is in the Royal collection, he was also honoured with a 1 man exhibition at the Goldsmiths hall entitled "50 Years of Silversmithing" in 1982. A Liberty Cymric silver matchbox holder, set with a single cabochon of turquoise, typical of the designer Archibald Knox for Liberty. The hallmarks are clear, although the makers mark is only partially visible, but clearly identifiable as Liberty. This box is not stamped "Cymric", although it undoubtably belongs to the Cymric range.

A rare pair of Georgian silver Coburg pattern sugar tongs, made in 1825 by Randall Chatterton. The tongs have the Coburg pattern on both arms, the bow has never been engraved. The tongs have the usual oyster heel (oyster shell on the bowls). The quality and weight is very pleasing, at 68 grammes they are heavier than most sugar tongs, and the condition is excellent. The hallmarks are clear, including makers mark RC (Grimwade 2290), this mark is often confused with Richard Crossley, who worked until 1812. The Coburg pattern was "designed for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell in 1810, this rare pattern was made by Paul Storr and is perhaps the pattern for which he is best known" - Ian Pickford, Silver Flatware, page 134. The Coburg pattern was also depicted in the Chawner & Co. pattern book of 1875 (Silver Flatware page 220). Randall Chatterton was a spoon maker, he was freed in 1809 and worked until 1845. A set of six sterling silver place card holders, all containing a very rare hallmark, the Queen's Award for Export Achievement. The holders are rounded rectangular in shape, with a zig-zag border, with supporting circular foot and holder to hold the place card in place. The front of the holders is blank, designed for personalised engraving, these have never been engraved. All 6 holders have 7 hallmarks, all clearly struck, including marks for London 1990, along with makers mark AN in shield, the sterling silver convention hallmark (scale with 925), additional 925 standard mark, and a rare and unusual 7th hallmark, the Queen's Award for Export Achievement (Royal Crown above cog device, with centre letter E). Ari Norman was the first British silversmith to be granted this award in 1989, he was then allowed to use the hallmark in 1989 and 1990, as per these pieces. The Queen's award was established in 1965, and still operates today. We are not aware of any other silversmith who has won this award, hence the scar...

A fabulous sterling silver soup ladle in the popular Fiddle, Thread and Shell pattern, with engraved Marais Family coat of arms, which is very clear. The ladle is a substantial size and weight, the quality is excellent. The hallmarks are very clear, including makers mark D&J W, for Daniel & John Wellby, who worked between 1827 and 1974 from Garrick Street, London. The Marais family coat of arms is described as "Azure, a chain sable fesswise, in chief a crescent reversed and a base of two hills vert" - Pama, Heraldry of South African Families, page 53, depicted on Plate 18, no 280, of the Bell Krynauw Collection. It dates back to Charles Marais of the farm Plasir de Merle, who arrived in the Cape in 1688, and was "murdered by a Hottentot on the farm in 1689". Note - we have other matching items with the Marais Family armorial.

A lovely silver seal top spoon made by the Guild of Handicraft, to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002. The spoon has a traditional seal top, hexagonal stem, hand hammered fig shaped bowl and a rat tail. Unusually the spoon has six hallmarks, including maker's mark G of H for the Guild of handicraft, sterling lion, 925 standard mark, leopard's head town mark, date letter C and the Queen's golden jubilee mark, only used in 2002. The spoon is handmade in the traditional manner, it is a pleasure to use and hold. The spoon would make an ideal Christening spoon, it could also be used as a jam spoon. The Guild of Handicraft is operated today by the Harts of Chipping Campden, "www.hartsilversmiths.co.uk". They have also published a book called: "The Harts of Chipping Campden - An insight into four generations creating fine silver in the Arts and Crafts tradition", we highly recommend this book.

A lovely set of 6 cast silver buttons, with a realistically modelled kingfisher in flight, surrounded by flowers and foliage. It appears each button was cast individually by hand, as the details in each is slightly different. Each button is fully hallmarked, but of interest is that the hallmarks are struck in different places, and some are partially obscured. William Walter worked between 1897 and 1906, and was based in Newgate St, London. They supplied high quality jewellery and silver smalls.
