An antique silver travelling inkwell, presented as a memento during the Anglo Boer War by Major General Arthur Sandbach. The inkwell is engraved "A memento of the F.I.D. Natal Army, From A.E. Sandbach 1900", the engraving is crisp and clear. The inkwell is cylindrical, with a bayonet fitted screw top domed lid, and patented anti-spill glass inkwell, which has an ingenious spout shaped interior. The inkwell is superbly designed and the quality is excellent, as you would expect from Sampson Mordan. The inkwell has been well used, and has numerous small dents (around 8 separate dents), the largest is 1 cm long. The base is clearly hallmarked for Chester 1899, alongside makers mark "S.M & Co Ld" in shaped shield, alongside "17". The interior is gilded, and is stained with remnants of old ink. The inkwell would have originally had a spring loaded cork insert in the lid, to keep a tight seal, this is missing. A Boer war antique silver vesta case, presented as a memento by General Sir Leslie Rundle, the Commander of the 8th Division of the South African Field Force. The vesta case is the usual rectangular shape, with spring hinged lid and gilded interior, and striker on the base, and a connecting ring so it could be attached to a fob chain. The case is good quality and in remarkably good condition, we think this was preserved by the owner and not used, many vesta cases of this period were well used and condition is often poor. The case is engraved on one side with a flag and "VIII" for 8th Division, the other side is engraved "S. AFRICA 1900 from L.R". The vesta case and lid are both clearly hallmarked for London 1900, and makers mark HBA for John Batson & Sons, who worked between 1851 and 1936, they were noted as "Army accoutrement makers" - source John Culme, Gold & Silversmiths, page 34. A pair of Fiddle pattern Cape Silver teaspoons, with very clear Cape silver pseudo hallmarks. The spoons have no engraving. The hallmarks include maker mark JJV in script, in an unusual 6 sided punch, between pseudo lion passant and pseudo duty mark, this is Queen Victoria, complete with hair bun. Jacobus Johannes Vos was born in 1834, the son of silversmith Willem Vos, he worked between 1854 and 1861, when he died early age 27, still unmarried. He was clearly a talented silversmith as he left behind good quality silver. Note - We have a matching teaspoon S 11570.

A Cape silver butter knife in the Fiddle pattern, with scimitar shaped blade, and reeded border across the top of the blade. The handle has original owners engraved initials in a fancy script, possibly JCLDLV. The knife has clear Cape silver hallmarks, makers mark W.M for William Moore, and Cape silver stub mark with 4 pseudo hallmarks, lion passant, date letter A, duty mark and leopard's head town mark - see our Cape Stub article in our articles section.
A matching Cape silver dessert spoon and fork in the Fiddle pattern, with very clear Cape silver pseudo marks. They are engraved with original owners initials JIB, which is slighty worn. The hallmarks are very clear, makers mark FW and the "Cape Stub", 4 pseudo - English hallmarks (lion passant, date letter, duty mark and leopard's head) struck mechanically in a fly press (see article on Cape Stub in "The Finial, 2007, and in the articles tab above). Fredik Waldek was also a chronometer, clock maker and jeweller. Heller (History of Cape Silver) commended Waldek for "excellent workmanship". Note - We have a matching pair of forks S 11619.

An interesting set of 3 Witwatersrand Agricultural Society Rand Easter Show Sterling Silver Medallions, all presented to J.B. (Barry) Orpen, of Bar Circle Brahmans, in 1961, 1962 and 1964. The first 2 were awarded to "J.D.H. Lady Jake Manso for Champion Brahman Cow/ Heifer", the 1964 was awarded to "Bar Circle 3/61 for Reserve Champion Brahman Cow/ Heifer". All 3 are well preserved in their original boxes, all marked W.A.S. on the lid, one with RMP on interior, the others with SAM interior (Royal Mint Pretoria became South African Mint in 1941, so possibly a replacement box). This medallion is described by Laidlaw as number 0144c (www.southafricanmedals.com, a site we highly recommend)he describes "Obverse: Horse, cow and calf, sheep and pig in a field flanked by sheaths of corn, behind on right, vintage car and steam engine, in the distance mine head works and chimney, radiant sun on the horizon. A concorde sterling silver wine label, engraved for Sherry, these labels were included in the "goodie bag" of passengers who flew on the Concorde in 1986. The label is retangular with cut corners, and is engraved Concorde with the logo below Sherry. The label is clearly hallmarked with BA (British Airways) makers mark and Birmingham hallmarks for 1986. It is intended to hang on a glass decanter. We have another Concorde wine label engraved for Vodka S 11626.
A Persian (Iranian) silver cigarette case, beautifully decorated with very fine engraving, amonst the best we have seen, clearly the work of a master craftsman. The front of the case features King Darius the Great and his regiment of Persian Immortals, a copy of the stone carvings found on the ruins of Persepolis. The King is seated, everyone else is standing, many are warriors carrying spears, but one figure is carrying an animal (or bird), perhaps an antelope as an offering to the King. The rear of the case has a highly intricate radial design, a series of stars or flowers getting larger, bordered by 4 semi circles in the 4 corners, the detail is spectacular. We are informed this design is called Tabaker, but this is not our area of expertise, all assistance welcome. The interior is finely polished, the silver loops to hold the elasticated straps are intact but the straps are not present. The hinge and clasp work perfectly, and the condition is very pleasing. A beautiful Norwegian antique silver 830 grade pastry server made by Norway's leading 20th century silversmith David Andersen. The server is trowel shaped, and has a detailed cetic design handle topped with a viking head, with a less intricate design on the back. The bowl is engraved with a heart shaped pattern, once again different on the back and the front. The quality is very pleasing, we think this is a cast silver handle. The server is clearly hallmarked 830S and the David Andersen hammer makers mark, this mark was used 1888 - 1925, so we know this is an early antique silver Andersen item. Andersen founded his business in 1876, and soon earned a reputation for quality, winning a gold medal in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He died in 1901, but the business continued from strength to strength, and is now run by the 4th generation of the David Andersen family.
An Art Deco Sterling silver trophy, beautifully engraved with the crest of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment, and unusually for Regimental silver, in excellent condition. The trophy stands on its original wooden base, with circular plaque with makers mark Mappin & Webb. The trophy is small but beautifully proportioned, with Art Deco handles. The engraving is also very crisp and clear, the hallmarks are also clearly visible. The Transvaal Scottish Regiment was established in 1902 at the end of the Anglo Boer war by John Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl, original members were Scottish volunteers. They served with distinction in both World Wars, including El Alamein. They still exist today, but in 2019 were renamed the Solomon Mahlangu Regiment, to reflect South Africa's freedom struggle. The regiment still wears Murray of Atholl Regimental tartan.
