Description: A Cape silver konfyt (preserve) fork in the Old English pattern, with 3 tines. The fork is engraved with original owners initials NJ. The fork is clearly hallmarked with makers mark WGL between 2 star devices, Welz mark 90 in the book Cape Silver, but without the face device. This mark was used by 2 generations of Lotter's, father and son, both called Willem Godfried Lotter. The father worked between 1770 and 1809, the son between 1810 & 1835, given the style of the fork we believe it is older, hence the work of the father. Twelve different members of the Lotter family are recorded as Cape silversmiths, who worked between 1735 and 1870.
